Where You'll Fly

Where Helicopter Pilots Work

Helicopters do jobs that planes cannot. That means a wide variety of work for a pilot but the right licence, ratings etc. are essential.

Offshore

Flying crews to and from oil, gas and windfarm sites.

Emergency medical and rescue

Carrying patients, doctors and paramedics, and joining search and rescue.

Charter and private

Flying business people and guests in comfort.

Corporate and VIP

Working for one company or family on set schedules.

Each job on AviatorJob shows the aircraft type, licence requirements, location, and contract specifics together with other essential requirements, so you know what to expect before you apply.

Air Ambulance · HEMS

Life Flying Emergency Medical Missions

Air Ambulance/HEMS pilots fly sick or injured people to hospital, in time critical conditions, and often at night or in poor weather. The work is intense but also rewarding. You are part of a small team with a doctor, a paramedic and a crew member, and good teamwork matters as much as good flying.

Most pilots in this field fly from one base and work set shifts. Preparation is key together with calm judgement and clear communication.

Requirements

What Operators Ask For

Every operator is different, but most require a similar set of requirements:

  • A commercial or airline transport helicopter licence, CPL(H) or ATPL(H)
  • A valid medical certificate
  • A type rating on the aircraft in use, such as the H145 or AW169
  • A good number of flying hours, often with night flying (NVG), some with Hoist (HHO)
  • Experience with crew resource management and safe decision-making

Requirements often are determined by the location of the job, the type of operation and the types the operator flies, so always read the full job brief. If you are a few hours short, apply anyway and tell the operator about your plans to build time.

Career Path

Building Your Flying Career

Many pilots begin as instructors, or in survey, tourist, or utility flying, to build hours. Then they move to offshore, charter, or HEMS/EMS roles. Others join from the military and bring skills that match many civilian roles well.

Helicopter pilot careers in the UK can develop and evolve in several ways depending on what you wish to achieve. Whatever your aspirations are, AviatorJob helps you see and evaluate what is on the market and gives you opportunities that you may wish to pursue.
